Spezify – a new way of searching the web

About a year ago, two young man Per Persson and Felix af Ekenstam started Spezify. The name of the project has an interesting story, first there was “Define” a name that would describe very good the service. They bought defi.ne  domain but they couldn’t use it because they were forced to have a representation in Niger… After some time spent on dictionaries and checking available domains, they settled on “Specify” a synonym of “Define”. Specify.com was not available so they changed the c with a z and the name was ready.

But what is Spezify exactly ?

I thought it would be nice to see a search result more like a feeling of looking at a motherboard…The ambition was an instant overview of both images and other medias , like a slice of the whole Internet on a certain subject, and from other sources then just Google… We though it’s silly to have to search for text/images/videos etc separately. – Per Persson (Web Designer magazine- UK)

They basically took relevance out of the equation and replace it with surprise. They say that relevance isn’t always  a guarantee that you will find what you are looking for.

The service is based on numerous APIs (Twitter, Amazon, Ebay, Wikipedia…) gathered in Flash. It worth to have a look at it and maybe it will become a very useful tool for your future project.
